While the 2026-27 FAFSA is still in beta testing, the form has cleared another hurdle ahead of its congressionally mandated October 1 release. In a letter to the House and Senate Education Committees, Education Secretary Linda McMahon formally certified that the form will launch by October 1, 2025.
Following the previous FAFSA cycle and the enactment of the FAFSA Deadline Act, the Department of Education (ED) is now required to certify by September 1 that the form will be ready to launch by October 1. If the department anticipates that the FAFSA will not launch on October 1, ED is required to testify before Congress to explain why.
“As of today, more than 1,000 students have successfully submitted the 2026–27 FAFSA form during the beta testing periods, with plans for tens of thousands more to finish the form before its availability to the general public by October 1,” McMahon wrote in her letter to Congress. “The FAFSA form is working thanks to the investments and focus that the Trump Administration has placed on technical competence and expertise.”
The department has also provided a FAFSA resource center, “FAFSA Central,” with product updates, submission stats, and more links to inform stakeholders about the 2026-27 FAFSA rollout.
Codifying the October 1 FAFSA launch date into law has been a top priority for NASFAA for many years. When operating as intended, an earlier release date allows colleges and universities to provide financial aid information to students much sooner.
“We are pleased to see that the 2026-27 FAFSA will be open to the public, as planned, on October 1,” NASFAA President and CEO Melanie Storey said. “The Department of Education has done this in practice for many years, but having this change codified into law will ensure that students and families have access to financial aid information sooner, giving them time to make informed decisions about enrolling in college. We applaud the department for reaching this milestone.”

Whether you believe it or not, Trump's administration is SUPERIOR over anything prior. Now a person can actually call and have an ED employee answer! How many years has it been since that happened? MAGA for the win...again.

Was this comment necessary? No Offense, but most can agree that appointing McMahon as head of DoE is anything but 'competence and expertise'.

The people who worked hard to fix the 24/25 FAFSA mess and make this rollout possible did so almost entirely prior to 1/20/25. They were ED and USDS staff who were all RIF’d. McMahon has no business taking credit for it.
