The Department of Education (ED) released its annual updates to the Federal Need Analysis Methodology for the 2026-27 award year. This is the core formula determining a student's Student Aid Index (SAI), a key factor in student eligibility for federal financial aid programs like Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, and Direct Loans.
ED is required to annually update the following tables that are part of the formula: the Income Protection Allowance (IPA), the Adjusted Net Worth of a Business or Farm, the Asset Protection Allowance (APA), the Assessment Schedules and Rates, and the Employment Expense Allowance. As expected, changes to the tables are minimal and primarily reflect standard inflationary updates. However, a notable and continuing trend is the APA remaining at $0 for the third consecutive year, meaning no family assets are shielded in the SAI calculation.
