WASHINGTON, D.C., JULY 14, 2025 — The United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) on Monday lifted an injunction that temporarily halted the Trump administration’s plans to lay off nearly half of the staff at the U.S. Department of Education (ED).
“It is concerning that the Court is allowing the Trump administration to continue with its planned reduction in force, given what we know about the early impact of those cuts on delivering much-needed financial assistance to students seeking a postsecondary education.
Our members, who work in financial aid offices at colleges and universities across the country, have reported operational delays, breakdowns in federal support systems, and an erosion of communication channels with the Department following the staff reductions in March. More than half (59%) said they have experienced noticeable changes in responsiveness, communication, or processing timelines from the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) since March.
Our students and our members need clarity and reliable support for these critical programs. With significantly more work on the horizon to implement the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, we reiterate our concerns that the Trump administration has not shared the details of a plan to redistribute the Department’s work in a way that does not cause significant disruption for America’s college students.
At the end of the day, the Trump administration — all administrations — must deliver on the promise and the programs that Congress passed to support students who wish to pursue postsecondary education.”
