Daily Briefing: Why Some Colleges Skip Federal Student Loans

"Nash Community College will no longer offer federal student loans, the North Carolina institution recently announced. Its president characterized the move as in line with regional trends. Could conditions be ripe for more colleges to reconsider their participation?"The Chronicle of Higher Education reports.

.... "Colleges could have other reasons not to offer loans, Sarah Austin, a policy analyst at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, told the Daily Briefing. They might determine that students are supported well enough without borrowing, perhaps by state aid. Or they might simply prefer students avoid debt."

... "New policies might shift what’s in colleges’ best interest, Austin said."
