Just less than four years after its launch, the Department of Education (ED), citing low consumer engagement, is slated to wind down support for its mobile app and instead direct borrowers to StudentAid.gov, where applicants more regularly submit their FAFSA application materials.
On June 30, when users open the mobile app they’ll be informed that the application is no longer available, and instead be directed to StudentAid.gov.
That messaging campaign will run through July 10, and will also include updates to banner text and other content on StudentAid.gov that refers to the app.
According to ED, fewer than 2% of applicants submit their FAFSA using the mobile app, while more than 15% use StudentAid.gov through a mobile device.
The myStudentAid mobile app was launched in 2018 with the aim of making it easier for students and parents to access and complete the FAFSA form on the device that works best for them.

I think it is WAY too early to make decisions about the popularity of this tool. GenZ is just starting college. I'm mourning it personally. It made completing the FAFSA so easy.

And we will spend at least a year responding to emails from students complaining to us that the FAFSA app doesn't work.

It was a good effort; too bad it didn't catch on. However, I hope the wind down means they can focus more resources on making the FAFSA website more reliable, especially in early October when it has struggled the past few years.

I will regret losing the ability to refer students & former students to the app to learn who is their servicer(s). Was incredibly convenient for that particular task.

The launch of this app was so hyped at that 2018 FSA conference. What a dud.
